Mannitol Salt Agar contains mannitol, sodium chloride, and phenol red. The role of sodium chloride in the medium is: - To select for all gram positive bacteria - To select for all gram negative bacteria - To inhibit organisms other than Staphylococci - To differentiate Mannitol Salt agar (MSA) from Staphylococcus medium 110 (SM H10) 17. Which of the following is not a selective and differential medium for the growth of Gram negative enteric bacteria? - MacConkey Agar - Hektoen Agar - Xylose Lysine Desoxycholate (XLD) Agar - Fluid Thioglycollate Medium (FTM) 18. When incubated in Hektoen enteric agar, Shigella sp. and Salmonella sp. will be expected to produce: - Smooth colorless colonies - Reddish mucoid colonies - Greenish blue colonies - Bright orange pigmented colonies

If it can grow, what is the color of colonies Explain why the bacterium will give these results. Eosin Methylene Blue Agar What are the expected results (growth and color) on Eosin Methylene Blue. Mannitol salt agar is a type of specialized media that contains enough salts to allow only halophilic (salt-loving) bacteria to grow. In this manner, it is considered to be a selective media. It also contains a pH indicator to test for mannitol fermentation. If the growth turns the media yellow, it is most likely Staphylococcus aureus. If the growth remains pink, it is most likely Staphylococcus epidermidis. In this manner (color indicator), it is considered to be a differential media. Clostridium tetani is an obligate anaerobic bacterium. This means that: Clostridium tetani will thrive in large skin wounds that result in significant blood loss. Clostridium tetani can be transmitted from a dog bite and thrive in a deep wound with minimal loss of blood. Clostridium tetani prefers to grow in the respiratory tract in a high oxygen environment. Clostridium tetani requires superoxide dismutase for growth.
