Histamines and other immune system chemicals cause blood capillaries to dilate and the capillary walls to become more permeable (leaky). This causes blood plasma (fluid), with immune system proteins along with phagocytic cells and white blood cells, to seep into infected or damaged tissues. This causes the tissues to become red, hot, and swollen. Overall, this process is known as the inflammatory response.
