Under laboratory conditions, muscle cells were broken up and separated into fractions containing mitochondria only ("Mitochondria" cell fraction) or all cellular components except mitochondria ("Cytoplasm" cell fraction). Each fraction was incubated with either glucose or pyruvate. Reactions were carried out either in the presence of oxygen or under anoxic conditions (no oxygen). Each fraction was then measured for the presence of CO2, lactic acid, alcohol, and ATP.
