Description regarding how the diuretic (at least 1 diuretic) works on the nephron. Include the part of the nephron that is affected as well as the mechanism of action (i.e., what does it do to the nephron to affect fluid volume?). Also, side effects of the diuretic.
There are different classes of diuretics, classified according to what renal tubule system they affect. Loop diuretics block the reabsorption of salt in the ascending limb of the loop of Henle. Potassium-sparing diuretics, like the name suggests, prevent the loss of potassium and work in the collecting tubule by promoting sodium and water loss. Thiazide diuretics work in the distal tubule to prevent reabsorption of salt in the body. Potassium loss occurs as a result. What pathologic or disease state might necessitate the use of one class of diuretics over another? Give an example and explain.
