Mitosis is a process that occurs in multicellular organisms. Its purpose is to produce new cells for growth, repair, and replacement. During mitosis, a parent cell divides into two daughter cells. The parent cell starts with a certain number of chromosomes, which in the case of humans is 46. Each daughter cell also ends up with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell, so they are genetically identical to each other and to the parent cell.
