B. Monocot whole plant In monocots, the vegetative stem remains very short and the shoot apical meristem is at or near ground level. This creeping stolon may branch, forming tillers (as in grasses). Leaves develop vertically from the shoot meristem. In many monocots, what appears to be stem is actually a collection of leaf sheaths, with the youngest leaves in the centre. The flower peduncle rises from each tiller. Unlike most eudicots, the tap root of monocots is replaced by a number of secondary roots, developing off the stem. Observe the live specimen of a Triticum (wheat) plant and identify and label the following features: Fruit Leaf blade Leaf sheaf Node Stolon Secondary roots This is a leaf sheath. It's written in the paragraph above the picture.

Define cotyledon (1 point). Define Monocot and Dicot (2 points). Which major plant groups use the terms monocot and dicot? (1 Point) Give two characteristics of monocot roots and dicot roots (4 points). Draw a vascular dicot plant with opposite simple leaves and label these parts (Tap Root, Apical root meristem, Lateral root, Apical shoot meristem, Stem, Cotyledons, Node, First foliage) (11 points).

Those plants whose seeds do not easily separate and have only one cotyledon are the monocotyledons, or "monocots" for short. Which plant is a monocot? One of these seeds should separate easily into two equal halves, called cotyledons. Plants with seeds having two cotyledons are called dicotyledons, or "dicots" for short. Of the seeds you examine, which plant is a dicot?
