A student observes a neuron under the microscope and notices the neuron does not contain any dendrites. He asks you for help because the neuron he's looking at doesn't look like the typical textbook drawing. What do you tell him? Some neurons don't contain dendrites. Neuron anatomy is very diverse. The neuron must have been damaged during dissection from the animal tissue. It's just an artifact of the preparation process. Dendrites are long thin extensions that don't stain well. It must be a mutation. The absence of dendrites isn't normal.

Motor neurons draw and label your sheath cells. Examine the slide labeled 'dendrites and nucleus'. Be sure to identify the cell body and axon.
