A student observes a neuron under the microscope and notices the neuron does not contain any dendrites. He asks you for help, because the neuron he's looking at doesn't look like the typical textbook drawing. What do you tell him? Some neurons don't contain dendrites. Neuron anatomy is very diverse. The neuron must have been damaged during dissection from the animal tissue. Its just an artifact of the preparation process. Dendrites are long thin extensions that don't stain well. It must be a mutation. The absence of dendrites isn't normal.

Distinguish the characteristics of the neuron structural types by clicking and dragging the labels to the correct location. Unipolar neuron that is functionally a sensory neuron: begins at a sensory receptor, such as a touch receptor, and sends information toward the central nervous system. Bipolar neuron that is functionally a sensory neuron: found in the olfactory cells of the nose, in some neurons in the retina of the eyes, and in sensory neurons of the ear. Multipolar neuron that is functionally a motor neuron: brings information via action potentials away from the central nervous system toward effectors (muscles and glands).

Neurons have several specialized structures, including dendrites. What might happen if an individual has malformed dendrites? a. The individual’s neurons would not be able to receive input properly. b. The individual’s neurons would not be able to synthesize proteins. c. The individual’s neurons would not be able to communicate with target neurons. d. The individual’s neurons would not be able to carry nerve signals.
Question 38 Which part of the neuron carries the nerve's electrical signal from one end of the neuron to the other? dendrites sensory neurons axon cell body Question 39 Which part of the neuron communicates with either the next neuron in the signal pathway or with muscle or gland cells? sensory neurons cell body axon dendrites axon terminal
