Once the substrate moves into the active site of the enzyme, a) the enzyme breaks the substrate into three products. b) the two molecules fuse together to form the product. c) the enzyme alters in shape to more closely fit the substrate. d) the substrate alters shape to more closely fit the active site. e) the substrate and enzyme both alter shape to fit together.

Substrate Active site Enzyme Enzyme-substrate complex (a) In this space-filling model of the enzyme hexokinase (blue), the active site forms a groove on the surface. The enzyme's substrate is glucose (red). (b) When the substrate enters the active site, it forms weak bonds with the enzyme, inducing a change in the shape of the protein. This change allows additional weak bonds to form, causing the active site to enfold the substrate and hold it in place.

An enzyme has surface pockets called active sites that bind specific substrates. Substrates are specific for certain enzymes, meaning no other substrates will attach to it. Once a substrate is bound, the enzyme chemically changes it to one or more reaction products. Then it releases the products, and is then available to act on another molecule of the same substrate. Since enzymes are not consumed by the reactions they catalyze, one enzyme molecule can convert millions of substrate molecules.
