One consumes a rich diet for years. One rarely goes for more than a couple of hours between meals. Accordingly one tends to keep one's blood glucose levels elevated. As a result Blank 1 (peptide hormone) will tend to be released in high amounts throughout much of the person's life. Target cells for this hormone will become resistant/less responsive to the hormone through the cellular process termed Blank 2. Blank 1 Add your answer Blank 2 Add your answer

Endocrine Physiology 1. If the biological effectiveness of a hormone were greatly reduced because its target cells lacked the appropriate receptors, would you expect the hormone concentration in blood to be high, normal, or low? Explain your answer. 2. Explain why an injection of epinephrine to combat an acute immune reaction (such as the response to a bee sting in an allergic individual) has an almost immediate effect, whereas an injection of a steroid hormone can take hours to have an effect. 3. Diabetics need to be particularly careful about their dietary intake- some are able to control the condition through diet alone. What sorts of foods should diabetics avoid? What foods should they try to get more of? What can they do if they make a mistake?

Case 2 – Homeostasis The hormone insulin enhances the transport of glucose from the blood into most of the body's cells. Its secretion is controlled by a negative feedback system between the concentration of glucose in the blood and the insulin secreting cells. Barbara is a pre-diabetic, and monitors her blood sugar every day under various conditions.
