The growth plate on both sides of the bone is made of hyaline cartilage connective tissue. The cells in this fairly flexible tissue grow in stages. First, chondrocytes multiply to lengthen the bone, then die to allow strong spongy osseous connective tissue to replace them. This happens over and over from the time you start to grow until the time you stop growing. Match the layers of the growth plate with their function: - Zone of proliferation: where chondrocytes multiply - Zone of hypertrophy: where chondrocytes grow - Zone of calcification: where chondrocytes die - Zone of ossification: where chondrocytes harden
