In order for our nervous system to give us accurate and useful information from our environment, our sensory system has to have certain characteristics. Sensory receptors are located at the peripheral ends of neurons. The energy or chemical that impinges upon and activates a sensory receptor is known as a stimulus. Sensory receptors generate graded potentials. The type of stimulus to which a particular receptor responds in normal functioning is known as its adequate stimulus. These sensory receptors are activated by changes in their adequate stimuli such as pressure, temperature, or light, and then change this information into action potentials. If threshold is reached in the afferent neuron, action potentials are initiated, which travel into the central nervous system. Overall, the process by which a stimulus is transformed into an electrical response is known as sensory transduction.
