Topic: Cell Cycle (Interphase, Mitosis, and Cytokinesis) The cell cycle describes the process that occurs throughout the body where one cell divides into two identical cells for repair, growth, and development. It is divided into two main parts: Interphase and the mitotic phase. Interphase (G1, S, and G2) is the longest part of the cell cycle. During G1 and G2 of Interphase, the cell is carrying out normal functions as well as growing, accumulating energy, and making proteins. However, during the S phase, DNA replication occurs. The mitotic phase includes mitosis and cytokinesis (See Chapter 6.2). Explain why it is essential that the genome of a cell be copied before the cell divides into two. Mitosis (See Figure 6.4) and note when (prophase, metaphase, anaphase, or telophase) each of the following occurs: - Spindle apparatus assembles - Spindle apparatus disassembles - Chromosomes condense - Chromosomes decondense - Nuclear envelope fragments - Nuclear envelope reforms - Chromosomes line up at the mid-point of the cell - Sister chromatids are pulled to opposite ends of the cell Cytokinesis is not a part of mitosis, even though it may begin before telophase (part of mitosis) is complete. (See Figure 6.4) What happens to the cell in cytokinesis?
