Part III: Differential WBC count A student scans a blood smear slide of a patient. They counted 50 white blood cells. Out of 50 WBC, there were 5 Basophils. Is this a normal count of Basophils? If not, can you make a diagnosis and potentially a prognosis for the patient? I understand that it is hard to diagnose something based on just one test. However, you are asked to diagnose this patient based on just the differential blood count.

Activity 3: Conducting a Differential WBC Count 1. Use the slide prepared for the identification of the blood cells in Activity 2 or a prepared slide provided by your instructor. Begin at the edge of the smear and move the slide in a systematic manner on the microscope stage, either up and down or from side to side (as indicated in Figure 29.5 on page 422). 2. Record each type of white blood cell you observe by making a count in the first blank column of the Activity 3 chart on page 422 (for example, |||| || = 7 cells) until you have observed and recorded a total of 100 WBCs. Using the following equation, compute the percentage of each WBC type counted and record the percentages on the Hematologic Test Data Sheet on the last page of the exercise, preceding the Review Sheet.

People infected with HIV eventually develop a diminished white blood cell count. When examining a blood sample under the microscope, would the blood cell composition of an AIDS patient look different from that of an unaffected individual? Why or why not? [Hint: Consult figure $30.3 .]$
