What are the effects of mindfulness?
Nicole S.
Some research suggests that mindfulness meditation may affect feelings of generalized anxiety. A researcher wants to investigate this and obtains a random sample of n = 25 adults who have been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and has them practice mindfulness meditation for 20 minutes a day, 3 times a week. After 6 months of practice, they are given a standardized anxiety assessment (measured on a scale of 0 – 60 with 60 as worst anxiety). The mean anxiety score of the sample was calculated to be M = 41. In the general population of adults with generalized anxiety disorder, scores on the anxiety assessment form a normal distribution with a mean of μ = 45 and a standard deviation of σ = 9. Does mindfulness meditation have a significant effect on anxiety? Test with α = .05. Referencing question #1 above, calculate the value of σM (standard error) and write a sentence interpreting it in context.

You read in a magazine that “nonphysical treatments such as meditation and prayer have been shown to be effective in controlled scientific studies for such ailments as high blood pressure, insomnia, ulcers, and asthma.” Explain in simple language what the article means by “controlled scientific studies.” Why can such studies provide good evidence that meditation is an effective treatment for high blood pressure?
