pertussis-whooping-cough-is-caused-by-a-bicterial-infection-and-symptoms-include-an-intense-cough-th-93842

Pertussis (whooping cough) is caused by a bicterial infection, and symptoms include an intense cough that lasts for weeks, sometimes leading to pneumonia and death. A complete vaccination against pertussis requires five doses, completed by age 5 . A pertussis outbreak occurred in Callifornia in 2010 , and a news article reported the following "Among fully immunized kids, there were about 36 cases for every 10,000 children two to seven years old, compared to 245 out of every 10,000 kids aged eight to twelve." Propose an explanation for these data and a public health solution based on your explanation.

00:01 So, in this question we are given a case of pertussis or whooping cough which is a disease in which there is repeated coughing and the individual can also experience pneumonia and eventually die.
00:15 So, here we are given that the for pertussis the children are given vaccination up to 5 years of age up to 5 years and a data was collected and it showed that there were 36 out of 10 ,000 children who had pertussis after vaccination which were 2 to 7 year old.
00:42 While in case of children who were 8 to 12 year old in these children 245 out of 10 ,000 individuals were affected by pertussis.
00:56 So, this basically shows that the children aged 8 to 12 year they experienced more cases of pertussis.
01:08 So, why this is so? why this is occurring? the main reason why this is occurring is because of the waning immunity by the vaccine.
01:20 Waning immunity by vaccine.
01:26 So, we are given that this vaccine for the whooping cough is given up to 5 years of age and it is working fine for 2 to 7 years.
01:38 So, up to this age this vaccine is providing enough immunity to fight this disease.
01:46 But after 8 years of age this vaccine is losing its efficacy.
01:53 So, this vaccine is losing efficacy because of which there is waning immunity or decrease in immunity against pertussis.
02:14 And that is why as the child is growing old up to 8 to 12 years of age there are more chances that he will get pertussis because the vaccine is losing its efficacy.
02:27 So, what are the measures which we can take to prevent this waning of immunity? so, firstly we have to provide booster doses of this vaccine.
02:41 Booster doses.
02:43 Booster doses are basically repeated doses of the vaccine which are given at certain intervals of time.
02:53 So repeated doses of vaccine...
