Phylogenetics presents the evolution of life as a series of bifurcation events that has produced the branches of the tree of life. However, not all major events on Earth occurred through branching. Instead, lineages have sometimes fused over time. What is a good example of a situation where lineages fused instead of bifurcating?

Step 1
Step 1: Define the concept: a lineage fusion (endosymbiosis) occurs when one organism lives inside another and they become a single, integrated lineage, rather than diverging through ordinary bifurcations. Show more…

Evaluate the differences between the two images, and consider the significance of those differences. What evolutionary question is better addressed by the ring-shaped phylogenetic tree (a) as opposed to the more typical, single-trunk phylogenetic tree (b)? What was the single organism from which all other forms of life on Earth arose? Did animals evolve from fungi? In which species of eukaryote did chloroplasts first appear? Did horizontal gene transfer likely influence the evolution of the three domains of life?

Fig. 5. A polytomous cladogram. 11. Imagine a case in which a cladogram is polytomous but you are confident that the data and methods are not the cause. What might a polytomous pattern mean, evolutionarily speaking? Think about what the "normal" bifurcating pattern of branching represents. (1pt)

The evolutionary history of a group of organisms can be represented in a branching diagram called a phylogenetic tree. As the name suggests, the branching pattern often matches how taxonomists have classified groups of organisms nested within more inclusive groups. Sometimes, however, the alignment of taxonomy and phylogenetic trees is not accurate. Explain the similarities and differences in phylogenetics and taxonomy and why they do not align. Use an example that includes humans as the most recent species of the phylogenetic tree. You should also define the following terms and give examples of phylogenetic trees that describe these terms, including: - MONOPHYLETIC group - PARAPHYLETIC group - POLYPHYLETIC group
