The surviving megaspore expands and undergoes three rounds of mitosis. Two haploid sperm cells are produced. Cell walls form between most of the nuclei. Three megaspores degenerate. The generative cell divides by mitosis. Four haploid megaspores are produced. The sperm cells are released into the embryo sac. One sperm cell fertilizes the egg cell and produces a diploid zygote. The other sperm cell fuses with both of the central nuclei, forming a triploid cell.
