Place the phases of T cell maturation in order from differentiation of precursor cells in the bone marrow to the establishment of mature T cells. 1. Bone marrow precursor cells --> LASTLY: Immunocompetent T cells Answer Bank Thymocytes begin to differentiate into either CD4+ or CD8+ cells. Naive T cells migrate out of the thymus. Lymphoid progenitor cells produce thymocytes. Lymphoid progenitor cells migrate to the thymus cortex. Thymocytes undergo positive selection. Thymocytes undergo negative selection. Hematopoietic cells differentiate into lymphoid progenitor cells.

The following immune cell types contribute to helper cell activation: Mast cells, Monocytes, Macrophages, Dendritic cells. B cells originate in the bone marrow and become matured in the thymus. T cells originate in the thymus and become matured in the local lymph nodes. The correct sequence of events for lymphocyte activation is: helper cells, killer cells.

B Cells vs. T Cells Move the labels to their correct location to complete this table that contrasts the characteristics of B cells and T cells. No Thymus Plasma and memory cells High numbers B Cells Yes T Cells Several types of activated cells Bone marrow Low numbers Table 13.1 Contrasting Properties of B Cells and T Cells Site of Maturation Specific Surface Markers: Immunoglobulin; T-cell receptor, Several CD molecules Circulation in Blood Receptors for Antigen: B-cell receptor (immunoglobulin); T-cell receptor Distribution in Lymphatic Organs: Cortex (in follicles); Paracortical sites (interior to the follicles) Require Antigen Presented with MHC Product of Antigenic Stimulation General Functions: Production of antibodies to inactivate, neutralize, target antigens; Cells activated to help other immune cells; suppress or kill abnormal cells; mediate hypersensitivity; synthesize cytokines
