The Universal Donor and the Universal Recipient. The A and B proteins are usually referred to as "antigens." Individuals synthesize antibodies to the antigens that they do not have. For instance, a person with Type A blood will produce antibodies to the B antigen. People with Type B blood make antibodies to the A antigen, people with Type O blood make antibodies to both the A and B antigen, and people with Type AB blood don't make either of these antibodies. A person with Type A blood can receive donated blood from a Type A donor. If a person with Type A blood (and therefore Type B antibodies) receives blood that is Type B or Type AB, the recipient's B antibodies will bind to the B antigen of the donor blood, causing the red blood cells to clump together and lyse (not a good outcome!). The Universal Donor can donate blood to any other ABO blood type. The Universal Recipient can receive blood from any other ABO blood type. a.
