Each muscle compartment of the thigh contains at least one muscle which functions to flex the knee. Which of the following INCORRECTLY identifies a muscle compartment and muscle which flexes the knee? More than one answer may apply. a. anterior compartment of the thigh - rectus femoris muscle b. anterior compartment of the thigh - sartorius muscle c. posterior compartment of the thigh - semimembranosus muscle d. posterior compartment of the thigh - biceps femoris/short head e. medial compartment of the thigh - adductor longus muscle f. medial compartment of the thigh - gracilis muscle 2. Which of the following muscles of the LEG crosses the knee joint? a. posterior tibialis muscle b. anterior tibialis muscle c. flexor digitorum longus muscle d. soleus muscle e. gastrocnemius muscle

Question 1: How does the strength of the force exerted by the quadriceps muscle change as the lower leg is extended? Question 2: What is the usefulness of a kneecap
Supratim P.
When you bend your knee, the quadriceps muscle is stretched. This increases the tension in the quadriceps tendon attached to your kneecap (the patella), which in turn increases the tension in the patella tendon that attaches your kneecap to your lower leg bone (the tibia). Simultaneously, the end of your upper leg bone (the femur) pushes outward on the patella. The figure shows the relationship between the quadriceps muscle, the patella, and the tibia.
