As older adults live longer, they often need more attention and care from their grown children. This may cause stress as adult children try to balance raising their own children, working, and taking care of their aging parents or grandparents. For this activity, use a sociological lens to examine the characteristics and growth of the Sandwich Generation by analyzing a real-life example or one from popular media. Use one to two major concepts and theories and appropriate terminology to interview a member of the Sandwich Generation, or to analyze a famous example from a television show or a movie. In your analysis, be sure to (1) explain each concept, theory, and term applied, (2) discuss the stresses, strains, and consequences of this type of arrangement, and (3) evaluate the individual and societal benefits and drawbacks of this living arrangement for the entire family.
Life Expectancy Some scientists believe there is a limit to how long humans can live. One supporting argument is that during the past century, life expectancy from age 65 has increased more slowly than life expectancy from birth, so eventually these two will be equal, at which point, according to these scientists, life expectancy should increase no further. In $1900,$ life expectancy at birth was 46 yr, and life expectancy at age 65 was 76 yr. In 2010 , these figures had risen to 78.7 and $84.1,$ respectively.
