Problem 3 - Finding the Acceleration of the System
Two masses are connected by strings and a pulley,
as shown. The system is unbalanced and moves.
Find the acceleration of the two masses.
(a) Draw a Free Body Diagram for both
of the masses.
(b) Choose to make the +x direction for the 3 kg mass in the direction you
expect it will move. Also choose the +x direction for the 4 kg mass to be the
direction you expect it will move. Note that this means the two masses have
different coordinate systems! That's OK, it'll work, just do it. Draw the +x
axis into each of the two FBDs above.
(c) Apply Newton’s Second Law to both masses. To do this, write down the
equation for Σon 3kg Fx and Σon 4kg Fx below. Note that any force that points in
the negative y direction will have a y component that is negative.
Σon 3kg Fx ___________=3a Σon 4kg Fx ___________=4a
(d) You should have two equations with the tension force and acceleration as the
only two unknowns. Simply eliminate the tension force variable from these
two equations to find the acceleration of the system.
