Project 6 - Nonpermanent Unions The bracket in the figure is welded to the plate. The material for bracket and plate is to be Aluminum 3004 (preferred) or, if not possible, a low-carbon steel such as AISI 1018. The thickness of bracket and plate is t = 3/ in and the diameter of the hole is D = 1 in. A force F = 4000 lb is being applied at a distance of 3 in from the plate. This design needs to be changed to make it a nonpermanent union. Design a fastened union that can withstand the forces indicated. In order to facilitate the fastened union, the bracket can be modified by adding ears at each side to place the bolt holes. The union will be disassembled from time to time. a) Identify the loads acting on the bolted union. b) Select the number of bolts, material and diameter, and select the preload. c) Calculate the length of the bolts and the load on the bolts and on the material because of axial loads. d) Distribute the external loads among all the bolts and calculate the factor of safety against shear of the bolts, assuming that the bolts take all the external shear force (basically for the critical case in which friction does not take the load because of loss of preload)
In summary, design the new union and make sure you have identified and checked all forces acting on the union, and give the factors of safety for the union
