Compared with nonspecific defenses, specific defenses are always present at birth. They discriminate between one threat and another, providing protection against threats on an individual basis and denying entrance of pathogens to the body.

Overview: Your immune system fights microbes with both specific and non-specific defenses. The non-specific defenses are always "on" and ready to go, and target a broad range of invaders, while the specific defenses target single types of organisms and get turned on only when needed. Non-specific defenses include processes such as phagocytosis and inflammation, and involve white blood cells as well as specialized proteins and chemicals. Among these proteins is lysozyme, an enzyme that breaks down the cell walls of bacteria. In this lab,you observe the action of lysozyme. Analysis of disinfectant test - RESULTS Once you have completed the Take-home Lab Kit #2 experiment using the instructions on Canvas or Lab Manual-29 part 1, obtain your two incubated plates. Please record your results using the table below and answer questions 1-6 that follow. Once completed, upload file as a word or pdf. file by the submission deadline: Sun. 5/16 by midnight. Assignment upload link is located in the Week 15 folder of the Canvas assignment tab. Record the amount of growth you observe. Specifically observe the areas on the plate to which you applied the drops. Use this key: + growth unaffected +/- growth slightly affected - growth significantly affected 0 growth completely prevented Species | Water | Lysozyme (10mg/mL) | Lysozyme (1mg/mL) | Tear Drops E. coli M. luteus
