In animal cells the intracellular concentration of K+ is much higher than in extracellular fluids. In contrast, the concentration of Na+ is much higher in extracellular fluids than inside of cells. These gradients are maintained by active transport, simple diffusion, facilitative carrier-mediated transport, ligand-activated channels, and pinocytosis.
