Renin dephosphorylates the inactive form of angiotensinogen and converts it into angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is then converted to angiotensin II by the enzyme angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). The angiotensin II hormone activates receptors, leading to vasoconstriction and the release of aldosterone. Aldosterone promotes sodium reabsorption and potassium excretion in the kidneys. Aldosterone also stimulates the release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) from the posterior pituitary gland. ADH acts on the collecting ducts of the kidneys to increase water reabsorption. This results in increased blood volume and blood pressure.
