If the mechanism of resistance to permethrin in a species of mosquito is detoxification by an enzyme, and you inhibit that enzyme in that mosquito, which of the following is true? It will take less time to kill 50% of mosquitoes in that group than in a control group that has not had its enzyme inhibited. It will take more time to kill 50% of mosquitoes in that group than in a control group that has not had its enzyme inhibited. The population resistant to permethrin will also be resistant to DDT, so blocking the detoxification enzyme and then exposing a test group to DDT will result in the same time to kill 50% of the test population. It will take less time to kill 50% of mosquitoes in that group than in a control group where the enzyme had not even evolved. The population resistant to permethrin will also be resistant to DDT and the time to kill 50% of the test population when exposed to DDT or permethrin will be the same regardless of whether the detoxification enzyme is blocked or not.

QUESTION 4 Which of these is an effective way to reduce our use of chemical pesticides? Wipe out their natural predators Plant flowers around the farm that are scentless so they don't attract any pests Grow plants in monoculture so you can treat them more effectively Attract pests to boxes that trap them inside QUESTION 5 All of these are true statements about chemical pesticides, EXCEPT: They can decrease crop yield due to endocrine disruption of the plants. Are partially responsible for honeybee colony collapse disorder. Can kill humans over time through direct exposure. Used to combat mosquito-bourne diseases like malaria, West Nile virus, and others.

A common approach for preventing malaria is killing the mosquitoes that spread the parasite. In the 1940s the insecticide DDT was discovered to be highly effective at killing mosquitoes. DDT initially killed 99% percent of mosquitoes in the areas where it was used. Soon after DDT was first used, health workers in Africa discovered that mosquito populations evolved resistance to DDT: each year DDT was applied, fewer and fewer of the mosquitoes exposed to DDT died. This happened everywhere DDT was used. Choose the answer that best reflects how a biologist would respond. Consider a female mosquito that was exposed to DDT during the years a population was evolving resistance to DDT. She survives and later lays a cluster of eggs. How will her exposure to DDT likely affect her offspring? Her exposure to DDT will have no effect on her offspring. Her exposure to DDT will give her offspring decreased resistance to DDT. The effect on her offspring of her DDT exposure cannot be predicted. Her exposure to DDT will give her offspring increased resistance to DDT.
The antimalarial properties of quinine $\left(\mathrm{C}_{20} \mathrm{H}_{24} \mathrm{N}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{2}\right)$ saved thousands of lives during construction of the Panama Canal. This substance is a classic example of the medicinal wealth of tropical forests. Both N atoms are basic, but the N (colored) of the $3^{\circ}$ amine group is far more basic $\left(\mathrm{p} K_{\mathrm{b}}=5.1\right)$ than the $\mathrm{N}$ within the aromatic ring system ( $\mathrm{p} K_{\mathrm{b}}=9.7 ).$ (a) A saturated solution of quinine in water is only $1.6 \times 10^{-3} M$ . What is the pH of this solution? (b) Show that the aromatic N contributes negligibly to the ph of the solution. (c) Because of its low solubility, quinine is given as the salt quinine hydrochloride $\left(\mathrm{C}_{20} \mathrm{H}_{24} \mathrm{N}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{2} \cdot \mathrm{HCl}\right),$ which is 120 times more soluble than quinine. What is the pH of 0.33$M$ quinine hydrochloride? (d) An antimalarial concentration in water is 1.5$\%$ quinine hydrochloride by mass $(d=1.0 \mathrm{g} / \mathrm{mL}) .$ What is the pH?
