Simple squamous epithelial tissue can be found in the air sacs (or alveoli) of the lungs as well as in the tiniest blood vessels called capillaries. Why is it important to have a single, thin layer of tissue in these locations, as opposed to having a thick layer of tissue? The tissue layer is thin so that molecules of oxygen and carbon dioxide gas can diffuse easily across. The tissue layer is thin to facilitate secretion of hormones. The tissue layer is thin so that nutrients can be absorbed more easily.
