Diesel engine - the fuel is ignited without a spark plug. Instead, it is adiabatically compressed with air in the cylinder to a temperature above the ignition temperature of the fuel. At the point of maximum compression, the fuel is injected into the cylinder. Suppose that air at 25%C has a volume Vi and is then adiabatically compressed and taken into the cylinder at a quasi-static temperature of 690%C (air is mostly diatomic). What is the ratio of volume V to Vi? Hint: Refer to Section 3.6 for Adiabatic Processes for an Ideal Gas relationship, expressed in terms of the adiabatic process pressure-volume derivation. Using temperatures, eliminate the ideal gas law and given pressures from the equations and solve for Vi. The ratio Vi / Vz for this idealized process.
