What is the logical relationship between monophyly and synapomorphy? A synapomorphy defines a monophyletic group. Monophyletic groups are never united by synapomorphy, but rather convergence or analogy. Synapomorphy is an article of agreement that scientists sign indicating their belief that a group is monophyletic.
