Question 19 2 pts A mutation that results in the codon UAG where there had been UGG is a nonsense mutation. a missense mutation. a frame-shift mutation. a large-scale mutation. Question 20 2 pts Which statement is not true about point mutation? Point mutation leads to less severe consequence. Point mutation may result in no changes to gene function. Point mutation is changes to single bases DNA sequence.

Use your genetic code (codon) table to answer the next two questions: What type of mutation would result if the sequence of a gene were altered so that the sequence of the mRNA was changed from: AUGCCGUGCAGUAAC to AUGCCAUGCAGUAAC A) a nonsense mutation B) a frame-shift mutation C) a base insertion mutation D) a silent mutation E) a missense mutation

A mutation occurs when there is a base change in the DNA sequence. Some base changes do NOT lead to changes in the amino acid sequence of the resulting protein. Why? Because some amino acids are encoded by more than one codon. Because the mutation does not affect the structure of incoming tRNA. Because the mutation can be repaired by the ribosome during translation. Because DNA mutation does not always have an effect on the resulting protein.

Which of the following statements best explains the fact that a mutation in a cell's DNA does not always result in an error in the polypeptide produced from that DNA sequence? (A) Some polypeptides are produced by a code other than a nucleic acid code. (B) The nucleolus can repair damaged DNA. (C) More than one codon code for the same amino acid. (E) Scientists have no idea why this phenomenon occurs.
