How does a nuclear hormone receptor affect changes in gene expression? The structure of the ligand-receptor complex allows it to recruit coactivators. Binding to the receptor allows the steroid hormone to enter the nucleus. The ligand-receptor complex interacts with RNA polymerase to activate transcription. Ligand binding allows the receptor to bind to its consensus hormone response element.
