How can a phagocytic cell that engulfs dead cells tell the difference between a living cell and a dead cell? Dead cells are always smaller than all living cells. Phosphatidylserine is only exposed on the extracellular face of the plasma membrane in dying/dead cells. Living cells can actively inhibit phagocytosis using hormones whereas dead cells cannot. Dead cells epigenetically modify their histones to indicate that the cell is dead. Phagocytic cells sense DNA fragmentation in dying/dead cells.

Explain how cell division and cell death work together to form a functional multicellular organism.
Cells can die by either apoptosis or necrosis. Which of the following is not observed during apoptosis but is something that happens during necrosis? Plasma membrane rupture, plasma membrane blebbing, the cell fragments into small membrane-enclosed bodies, chromatin condensation around the nuclear periphery, or DNA fragmentation.
