Animals Depend on Plant Foods 11-3 Photosynthesis: A Vital Process Photosynthesis is the process that uses sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. Glucose is made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms that fix sunlight as "bound energy." Animals that consume plants directly are herbivores; animals that prey on herbivores as their primary source of food are carnivores. Carnivores are indirectly dependent on the foods produced by photosynthesis. Only about 0.1 percent of the solar energy that reaches Earth's surface is captured by plants. An animal whose diet includes both animal flesh and plant foods is classified as an omnivore. The reverse of photosynthesis is respiration. In this process, glucose is burned or oxidized, releasing the energy that was bound within the plant food during photosynthesis. An example of oxidation is the burning of wood in a fireplace.
