The Kirby-Bauer test is used for? (a) determining the dose of antibiotic to use for an infection. (b) testing for pathogenic bacteria. (c) determining the susceptibility of a microbe to an antimicrobial agent. (d) testing the effectiveness of disinfectants. A clear zone around an antimicrobial disk on a plate being used for a Kirby-Bauer test indicates? (a) a negative result. (b) complete susceptibility of the bacteria to the antimicrobial. (c) resistance of the bacteria to the antimicrobial. (d) where bacteria are not able to grow. What is special about Mueller-Hinton agar that makes it useful for the Kirby-Bauer test? (a) The plates are selective for pathogens. (b) The plates are a uniform recipe and depth to insure reliable results one plate to the next. (c) The plates prevent diffusion. (d) The plates are sticky to insure the antimicrobial discs will not fall off.

In the Kirby-Bauer procedure, all aspects of the test are standardized to ensure reliable results. Mueller-Hinton Agar is used, having a pH between 7.2 and 7.4, and is poured to a standard amount. The thick agar slows lateral diffusion and thus produces smaller zones of inhibition of growth than plates held to standard depth.
