deficiency, but rather tryptophan deficiency, which is not found in proteins. Question 9 (8 points) = Listen Why are alanine and glutamine the most abundant amino acids in blood? Glutamine and glutamate work together to move nitrogen from the mitochondria to the cytoplasm, and in the process, export alanine. Glutamine is required for the urea cycle and alanine is the precursor for pyruvate, which is needed for gluconeogenesis. Glutamine is an important neurotransmitter and also responsible for unami flavoring (monosodium glutamine; MSG); alanine is a small amino acid. Glutamine carries nitrogen from most tissues to the liver and alanine carries nitrogen to the liver from muscle cells.

Normal human blood plasma contains all the amino acids required for the synthesis of body proteins, but not in equal concentrations. Alanine and glutamine are present in much higher concentrations than any other amino acids. Suggest why.
Discussion of how peripheral tissues remove unwanted ammonia or amino nitrogen in terrestrial animals tends to focus on glutamine and alanine. a. What is the role of these two amino acids in the process? b. What happens when these two amino acids are taken up by the liver? c. How is the unwanted nitrogen finally removed from the body? Be sure to explain your answers.

Glutamine is an amino acid which functions as a transport for ammonia. The liver and kidneys possess an enzyme called glutaminase which catalyses the conversion of glutamine to glutamate and the release of ammonia, but ammonia is toxic to tissues. Describe the purpose of these two tissues having this enzyme and explain the fate of the ammonia released in each.
