You do what you can do. Red blood cells lack mitochondria. These cells process glucose to lactate, but they also generate $\mathrm{CO}_{2}$. What is the purpose of producing lactate? How can red blood cells generate $\mathrm{CO}_{2}$ if they lack mitochondria?
Which of the following is NOT a difference between the aerobic and anaerobic metabolism of glucose? options: Anaerobic metabolism produces less ATP than aerobic metabolism. Anaerobic metabolism produces more NADH than aerobic metabolism Anaerobic metabolism produces more lactate than aerobic metabolism. The citric acid cycle is only involved in aerobic metabolism, not anaerobic. The mitochondria is only involved in aerobic metabolism, not anaerobic.

B) RBCs do not have mitochondria. So they convert glucose to lactate. Lactate is a dead-end product which can only be used to make glucose. Why do they then produce lactate? RBCs also produce CO2. How do they produce CO2 without mitochondria?
