Refer to the Biochemistry in Focus section of your text for this chapter to answer this question. In addition to nonphotochemical quenching, what role do accessory pigments have in plants? Accessory pigments improve the light-harvesting efficiency of the chloroplasts by capturing and funneling light energy to the reaction centers in photosystems I and II. Accessory pigments donate electrons to P700+ in photosystem I to regenerate P700. Accessory pigments donate electrons to P680+ in photosystem II to regenerate P680. The accessory pigments generate a proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane.

THE ROLE OF PIGMENTS Why are carotenoids considered accessory pigments/ why is that a bad term for them? a) Light absorbed by carotenoids is not used for photosynthesis/ carotenoids are necessary to plants to prevent leaves from oxidative damage to the chlorophyll molecules. b) Light absorbed by carotenoids is not used for photosynthesis/ carotenoids are necessary to plants to prevent leaves from overheating. c) Light absorbed by carotenoids is not directly used for photosynthesis/ carotenoids are necessary to plants to prevent leaves from overheating. d) Light absorbed by carotenoids is not directly used by photosynthesis/ carotenoids are necessary to plants to prevent leaves from oxidative damage to the chlorophyll molecules.

General Biology Laboratory Exercise: Part B: Photosynthesis Worksheet 1. What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis? Label which are reactants & products. 2. Where does each reactant of photosynthesis come from? 3. Which 2 products of photosynthesis are reactants in aerobic respiration? 4. What are the two types of reactions in photosynthesis? Use the terminology found in your textbook. 5. Label the following: thylakoid membrane, stroma. Draw arrows where water and carbon dioxide enter and where oxygen and sugars exit. Be clear as to whether these substances are entering or exiting the thylakoid membrane or the stroma. 6. Where in the chloroplast do the light reactions occur? 7. Where in the chloroplast do the Calvin cycle reactions occur?
