Applying Theories and Reflecting on Skills Read the following case study. Select any of the four theories discussed in this activity, and then use the Theory Application Template below to explain the behaviors/situation in the case study. Reflect on this process. What feedback did you get from the teacher in the practice assignment? How did you use that in this assignment? Case Study: Cheyanne and Ricki are thinking about starting a family. They truly believe that all couples should have children because that is what good families do. In their country, the government has passed a new law that makes it possible for Cheyanne and Ricki to use reproductive technologies to select the most genetically perfect embryo to become their baby. Since the law has been passed, there has been a tremendous economic gain for the current government. However, because the technologies are expensive, not every family can afford them. Those that can afford it have a distinct advantage - they are able to select the sex of their baby. Cheyanne thinks that they should use reproductive technologies to give their baby the best life possible. Ricki thinks that it is inhumane and that they should simply raise the child that nature gives them. Cheyanne argues that most couples their age are choosing to use reproductive technologies. She believes that if they do not, their child will not be able to compete with other children his or her own age at school since all the other babies will have been genetically engineered to be as perfect as possible. Ricki says he would rather spend the money to allow Cheyanne to have more time off when the baby is born. Cheyanne argues that she wants to go back to work and that time off is unnecessary. She thinks the baby will be best in a daycare when she is at work, but Ricki believes the mother should stay home with the baby as long as possible. They cannot agree on anything. Her mother is a space engineer, and her father stays at home to help care for her and her younger brother. Sydney helps take care of her younger brother, and she excels in math. She watches her mom perform calculations and she wants to be just like her when she gets older. Sydney is upset that she is sometimes teased at school for liking math. She feels confident in her learning abilities but less confident in her ability to make friends, especially with boys.
