The neurotransmitter GABA can bind to two different receptors. When GABA binds, the GABA-A receptor is permeable to negatively charged chloride ions (which flow into the cell) while the GABA-B receptor is permeable to positively charged potassium ions (which flow out of the cell). Based on this information, you would expect that release of GABA would result in the post-synaptic cell being: Less likely to fire for both receptor types. More likely to fire for both receptor types. More likely to fire for GABA-A only. Less likely to fire for GABA-A only.

Walk through how GABA works as an inhibitory neurotransmitter. Describe how the knockdown of GABA, vigabatrin, will lead to the prevention of seizures. Please cover the enzymatic inhibition mechanism of vigabatrin. Please include images from the internet to help illustrate.

B. GABA-Gated Ionotropic Receptors: What are these? How do they work? How are they enhanced by Benzodiazepines & Barbiturates? Metabotropic Receptors: G-protein Coupled Receptors. Explain the structure of G-protein-coupled receptors. What are the GENERAL steps involved in transmission at these receptors? Describe the G-protein-coupled effector systems/pathways (discussed in class). Explain why ACh slows heart rate. Discuss phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of ion channels. In addition, discuss the function of signal cascades and the role of protein phosphatases.
