Shanidar 1 is the name of the discovery of remains of an elderly Neanderthal in a cave in Iraq. What is one of the special things about this find? His cranium is more robust than modern humans but otherwise identical. His was the only fossil in the cave, indicating he lived an isolated life. The extent of his injuries indicates he may have been cared for by other members of his group. Both of his arms were completely intact.

What makes the hominin remains from Gran Dolina Cave, Atapuerca, of special interest to anthropologists? The small size of the new species of Homo erectus found here demonstrates the effects of evolving on an isolated island. All of the dead were laid out in carefully prepared graves. Some of the bones have cutmarks at key muscle attachment areas, which indicate butchering and possible cannibalistic activity among Homo erectus populations. Some of the bones show impact marks, suggesting that they were broken open for marrow by large carnivores that also lived in these caves.

Australopithecus africanus, Sts 5 Homo sapiens, Upper Cave 101 1. Are there any other differences that help you differentiate these hominin skulls? Consider only anatomical differences, not alternations such as discoloration, fractures, missing teeth. 2. Choose one trait that varies from your observations. Propose how evolutionary forces (natural / sexual selection, drift, mutation, migration) could explain this difference.
