Some anaerobic bacteria can take up dihydroxyacetone and phosphorylate it using the enzyme dihydroxyacetone kinase: dihydroxyacetone + ATP -> dihydroxyacetone phosphate + ADP They have all the enzymes of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, as well as lactate dehydrogenase. How many ATP would be generated by the conversion of 1 molecule of dihydroxyacetone to lactate? Another anaerobic bacterium takes up the lactate generated by the bacterium in the previous question. How many ATP would it spend converting 2 lactate to one fructose-6-phosphate?

If a bacterium using aerobic respiration was to degrade one lipid molecule that is composed of a glycerol molecule, a 12-carbon fatty acid, and an 18-carbon fatty acid, how many ATP would that cell make? Use the information below to build up your total number of ATP molecules. Assume no other carbon source is available. A. Glycerol is broken down to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate, a glycolysis intermediate, via the following pathway: Notice this process costs ATP but generates an FADH2: Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate Glycerol ATP ADP FAD FADH2 B. Each fatty acid is broken down through a pathway which converts every two carbons into acetyl-CoA.

How much ATP can be obtained by the cell from the complete oxidation of one glucose vs anaerobically converting to lactate or ethanol? Fill in the table below: Aerobic Oxidation of Glucose Molecule Produced ATP Made Glycolysis NADH ATP ATP ATP 2 pyruvate acetyl-CoA NADH ATP NADH citric acid cycle (2 rounds) FADH2/QH2 ATP GTP ATP Total ATP Anaerobically ATP made: ATP

Anaerobic fermentation is a process that produces little ATP. This process occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell. During fermentation, hydrogen atoms and electrons from NADH are donated to ATP synthase instead of the electron transport chain. Fermentation recycles organic molecules so that glycolysis can continue. During the fermentation process, molecules of ATP are produced.
