Some ornithologists believe that many species of songbirds are threatened by deforestation. Yet they also claim that, despite recent reforestation, matters continue to worsen, since it is fragmentation of forest rather than reduction of forest size that endangers songbird species. The introduction of open spaces and corridors in forests reduces the distance of songbird nests from unforested areas and thus reduces the songbirds' natural shield from predators. The claim that there has recently been reforestation plays which one of the following roles in the ornithologists' argument? A It is used as evidence that various species of songbirds will continue to be threatened with extinction. B It is presented as a claim that is rejected by ornithologists who present declining songbird populations as evidence of deforestation. C It is presented as a phenomenon that is compatible with the ornithologists' claim that the threat to songbirds continues to worsen. D It is used as evidence that songbirds' predators will continue to have a habitat and so will continue to pose a threat to songbirds.

Several endangered birds are under consideration for use of an ex situ conservation program to save their species. Species A lives in a relatively stable habitat but is extremely rare. Species B is also extremely rare, and lives in a habitat threatened by possible human expansion. Numbers of species C have plummeted in the last 50 years to less than a hundred individuals and the survivors live in a habitat that is declining but could be improved over time. Which of these species should conservationists choose for their ex situ program? A. Any of the three species, because their situations are relatively similar. B. Species B, because of the potential human threat. C. Species C, because of its rapid decline and its recoverable habitat. D. Species A, because of its rarity.

I chose to investigate how deforestation impacts the spread of pathogens. This is an important issue to investigate because deforestation is often mainly seen as an issue that causes habitat destruction, loss of biodiversity, and climate change. However, various studies suggest that deforestation can additionally cause the spread of pathogens in both temperate and tropical climates, highlighting the direct connection between the health of ecosystems and human health. While factors such as our current agricultural practices, urbanization, and loss of biodiversity also impact the spread of pathogens, deforestation currently has the most significant impact on the spread of pathogens (Seghal et al., 2010). This is partially due to the fact that there are organisms who live in these habitats that carry many of the same pathogens as humans. Seghal et al. (2010) explains that, "....The migration and dispersal of birds can also change with habitat degradation, and thus expose populations to novel pathogens. Some recent work has shown that the results of landscape transformation can have confounding effects on avian malaria, other haemosporidian parasites, and viruses". In other words, as habitats get destroyed and organisms are forced to migrate to other places, they have more potential to spread pathogens to humans and other wildlife in the process. In conclusion, understanding how deforestation can lead to the spread of pathogens in the human population and in other wildlife populations could be important to preventing future pandemics and represents how the health of the planet is directly linked to human health. These studies also further underline the importance of protecting forests and other ecosystems that have a lot of biodiversity.

Warblers are a group of small songbirds consisting of many species. The table summarizes data collected on the diets of two species of warblers. In addition, both species A and B use the same types of nesting materials and sites for building nests. A biologist observes that Species A and Species B primarily inhabit different regions of a forest in western Canada. During a forest fire that wiped out the region it inhabited, Species B fled to the region inhabited by Species A. Predict what is likely to happen to these two species in the future. Explain your reasoning. a. Both the species will survive because of difference in needs for food and nesting space. b. Species A will increase in population whereas species B will remain same due to the overlapping needs for food and nesting space. c. Only one of these species will survive in this region due to the difference in needs for food and nesting space. The species that loses will either die off or migrate to another region. d. Only one of these species will survive in this region due to the overlapping needs for food and nesting space. The species that loses will either die off or migrate to another region.
