Some Polytrichum species achieve substantial height considering that they lack true vascular tissues for transporting water, nutrients, and products of photosynthesis produced throughout the plant body. Keep in mind that although bryophytes are non-vascular plants, there are certain cells in the center of the gametophyte stem, called hydroid cells, that assist in osmosis and water distribution. Pull off leaf-like structures and observe them under your compound microscope. Looking at the underside, can you see any respiratory openings? If not, why not?
