Step 1
Sows will usually come into heat 3 to 7 days after weaning. This is a critical period for reproductive management as it directly impacts the sow's ability to conceive in the subsequent cycle. Show more…

1. Describe how the target ages for first mating and weaning age of a sow's litter will change based on replacement rates of sows. 2. In an effort to improve the number of litters per sow per year, a farmer has attempted to shorten lactation length as well as the weaning to reconception period. Describe why doing this may actually reduce the number of litters per sow per year. 3. Describe the relationship between feeding levels of a breeding sow during breeding, gestation, and lactation. 4. Other than possibly improving the number of litters per sow per year, what are the other potential benefits of practicing early weaning?

Prenatal injection of the sow (mature female hog) during gestation with recombinant porcine somatotropin (rpST) will increase the muscle growth potential of her progeny, and intramuscular rpST injections of market hogs will also stimulate muscle growth. What mechanism explains muscle hypertrophy in each scenario, and which effect is longer-lasting? Hint: Prenatal injection with rpST will alter hyperplasia of muscle progenitor cells.

Short white-furred guinea pigs are produced by crossing true-breeding short brown-furred and long white-furred guinea pigs. The F1 population is then crossed with these long white-furred parents to produce backcrossed guinea pigs. The expected fur length and color in these guinea pigs should be short white, long brown, and long white. To increase the numbers of backcrossed progeny, cross two of the males with their short brown-furred mother (one time; the mothers have short brown fur, long white fur, and long hair). Now, mate the maximum three times, thus producing a certain number of progeny. Then cross the old white-haired male guinea pig with another brown-haired female F4, which would produce monony.
