The first stage of cellular respiration, known as glycolysis, takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell. The two major phases of glycolysis are energy investment and energy payoff. In order for glycolysis to move forward, a cell must use molecules of ATP. After glycolysis, a total of 2 molecules of ATP and 2 molecules of NADH are created, yielding a net of 2 molecules of ATP. 90% of glucose's energy is found in the bonds of pyruvate at the end of glycolysis.
The citric acid cycle, also known as the Krebs cycle, takes place in the mitochondria. For every turn of the cycle, 3 molecules of NADH, 1 molecule of FADH2, and 1 molecule of ATP are created.
The ATP synthase enzyme and the electron transport chain are embedded in the inner membrane of the mitochondria.
During chemiosmosis, H+ ions diffuse from the intermembrane space into the matrix and are then pumped back into the intermembrane space using the enzyme ATP synthase.
