STATEMENT Loadshedding has become like second nature to the citizens of South Africa. Eskom blames this on a lack of maintenance and increased demand. Loadshedding has caused irreparable damage to a sizeable number of businesses and there are still businesses that are still in the process of recovering from the post-loadshedding shocks. But the current trend of loadshedding has declined dramatically and rumour ha it that this is all because of the lurking elections. In which market structure does the electrical energy sector operate?

The integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind can lead to fluctuations in power supply and demand, affecting the frequency and stability of the grid. Traditional generators provide inertia, which helps dampen rapid frequency changes, but renewable sources lack this property. To address these challenges, strategies must be developed to control frequency changes and enhance emergency frequency control. Additionally, adapting under-frequency load shedding schemes for changing load patterns due to distributed photovoltaic systems is crucial. Meeting evolving frequency control needs can be achieved through demand response and non-fossil fuel technologies. Accurate monitoring of inertia, considering both generator and load contributions, is essential. Ensuring the availability of frequency control services during periods of high renewable energy output and planning for reliable regulation FCAS to manage increased variability are vital steps to maintaining grid stability and reliability.

(i) The peak load on a power plant is 60 MW. The loads having maximum demands of 30 MW, 20 MW, 10 MW, and 14 MW are connected to the power plant. The capacity of the power plant is 80 MW and the annual load factor is 0.50. Estimate: (a) The average load in the power plant. [2 marks] (b) The energy supplied per year. [2 marks] (c) The demand factor. [2 marks] (d) The diversity factor. [2 marks] How does a combined cycle power plant work? Explain with a neat sketch. An electric utilities company must choose between two technology options for generating electricity for its customers in the future: coal or nuclear energy: In order to assess the attitudes of local citizens, the power company conducted public opinion poll: Four sectors were considered: news media, coal miners' union, environmentalists and conservationists, and local groups. Fifty (50) persons were randomly sampled from each sector and asked to give their opinions: The results of the survey are shown in the table below: Coal News Media Miner's Union Environmentalists and Conservationists Local Groups Total Support Coal Option Support Nuclear Option Neutral 23 Totals 200 Construct 90% two-sided confidence interval for the percentage of environmentalists and conservationists who support the nuclear option: What is the upper confidence limit?
