Stomatal pores on leaves open at dawn and close at dusk. What makes these pores open and close? High concentration of oxygen in the morning air causes the guard cells to stretch apart. The turgidity changes in guard cells with unevenly thickened walls cause them to open the pore. The water loss from guard cells at sunrise pulls the leaf epidermal cells apart. The heat of the sunlight warms up the interior of the leaf, expanding the guard cells.
