Text: Health Ltd has an internal audit unit. They are currently being audited by their external auditors in accordance with the relevant auditing standards. As part of your work as an external auditor, you are reviewing the non-current assets audit program of the internal auditors and notice that the basis of their testing is a representative sample of purchase invoices. They use this to test entries in the non-current assets register and the updating movements on the annual budget. Required: (a) Explain why this is not a good test for completeness. (b) For each of the sources of audit evidence identified below, provide four practical examples of how members of your audit team may use such evidence to support their audit conclusions in respect of the final audit of Health Ltd's financial statements for the year ending 31 July 2020. John, the audit partner in charge of Cash CPA Firm, is discussing the concept of risk with a new audit intern, Sarah. Sarah explains that she understands what risk is but doesn't understand why auditors would need to concern themselves with it. Which of the following represents John's best reply? A. Risk is something that all auditors need to be concerned about. The only way that risk can be eliminated is through an effective audit. B. Risk can really mean anything that stops the company from achieving its operational and financial goals. Part of the auditor's job is to identify risks that may materially affect the client's financial statements. C. Part of what the auditors do toward the end of an audit is complete the risk assessment phase. This involves substantive testing and discussing risk with the client's major shareholders. D. A major component of risk is the auditor's risk of material misstatement, which is inversely related to control and detection risk.

The report produced by the auditor should be the first thing that a user of a financial report reads. It is only having read the audit report that the user can have any confidence that the contents of the financial report are a reasonable representation of the financial position and performance of the company. In order to understand what comfort the audit report gives, any user must understand what an audit is, the role of the auditor and the role played by management and the board of directors of the company. The amount of information included in the auditor's report has increased in recent years in an attempt to reduce the expectation gap. Required (a) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the standardisation of audit reports. (b) Explain the following components of an auditor's report and discuss why they are important: (i) auditor's and directors' responsibilities. (ii) independence. (iii) audit opinion.
